The SR-22 Timeline in California
Day 1 — License Suspension
Your license is suspended by the California DMV following a DUI, uninsured accident, or other qualifying violation.
Shortly After — Get SR-22 Filed
You purchase SR-22 insurance and your insurer files the certificate with the California DMV. Sanctuary Insurance Services does this the same day — often within hours.
License Reinstated — 3-Year Clock Starts
Once all DMV requirements are met, your license is reinstated. The 3-year SR-22 maintenance period begins from this date.
3 Years Later — SR-22 Requirement Ends
The California DMV notifies you that the requirement is complete. You can then switch to a standard auto insurance policy, which may come with lower premiums.
Does SR-22 Affect Your Insurance Rates Permanently?
SR-22 itself does not stay on your insurance record permanently. Once the required period ends and you no longer need SR-22, you can shop for standard insurance policies again.
Most violations that trigger SR-22 requirements stay on your California driving record for 7–10 years, which can affect your rates during that time. However, as your record cleans up over time, your rates will typically improve significantly.
How Do You Know When SR-22 Is No Longer Required?
The California DMV will send you a notice when your SR-22 requirement period is complete. You can also check your driving record online at the California DMV website.

Can You Remove SR-22 Early in California?
No. California does not allow early removal of the SR-22 requirement. You must maintain coverage for the full required period — typically 3 years from reinstatement. There are no exceptions to this rule.
